Autumn Foodie Guide: Farm Shops & Pick-Your-Own in Dorset, the New Forest & Salisbury

One of the best parts of an autumn stay in our corner of the country is the food — this region is dense with genuinely excellent farm shops and pick-your-own farms, many run by the same families for generations. Here's where to head during your stay.

Farm Shops Worth the Detour

The Udder Farm Shop, near Gillingham on the edge of the Blackmore Vale, has been run by the same farming family since 2005. Expect their own lamb and beef, a well-stocked deli counter, and a coffee shop that's a good stop after a walk in nearby Duncliffe Woods.

Rawston Farm Butchery & Farm Shop, near Blandford Forum, is a five-generation family farm known for grass-reared Aberdeen Angus and Hereford beef, plus their own venison and a good seasonal veg selection — worth combining with a visit to the market town itself.

Washingpool Farm Shop & Café, near Bridport, is a multi-award-winning spot with an on-site café, ideal for lunch alongside stocking up for the week.

Pamphill Dairy, near Wimborne, is a working farm shop with its own butchery and a lovely attached café — the setting, surrounded by wildflower meadows and grazing livestock close to the Jurassic Coast, makes it a destination in its own right, not just a shopping stop.

Closer to the New Forest

Cat & Fiddle Farm, near Hinton Admiral, and its sister site Sopley Farm, near Christchurch, both grow a wide range of fruit and vegetables on the edge of the New Forest, with produce available both pick-your-own and ready-picked in season. Good for pumpkins, blackberries and autumn veg, with picnic spots on site.

Hockey's Farm Shop, near Fordingbridge, is well worth the drive for its meat counter alongside a solid range of local veg.

A Few Tips for a Proper Farm-Shop Day Out

• Autumn is pumpkin and squash season across all of these — most run dedicated pick-your-own patches from early-to-mid October
• Many are dog-friendly in the shop and grounds (though not always in the pick-your-own fields) — worth checking on arrival
• Cash and card are both usually accepted, but small independent farms occasionally prefer card-only or cash-only on quieter days — worth having both
• Opening hours shrink as the weather turns, so it's worth a quick check before setting off, especially midweek

Combine two or three of these with a countryside walk and you've got a full, proper autumn day out — and a fridge full of better produce than most supermarkets can offer.
